In an exchange of letters with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, President George W. Bush welcomes Sharon’s disengagement plan as “a real contribution towards peace” and reiterates Israel’s right to “secure and recognized borders.”  Bush also notes that it is “unrealistic to expect... [Israel’s] full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949” and that “any final status agreement will only be achieved on the basis of mutually agreed changes that reflect these realities.”
