More than 7,000 activists, students and scholars from all 50 states traveled to the nation’s capital, June 2–4, for the pro-Israel community’s premier annual event: the AIPAC Policy Conference.
The conference—AIPAC’s largest ever—featured addresses from top U.S. policymakers, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the bipartisan leadership of the House and Senate.
Both the Democratic and Republican presumptive nominees for president—Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)—spoke to the record crowd, as did then-Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY).
At the Gala Banquet, attended by nearly half the Congress, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert expressed the Jewish state’s deep appreciation for AIPAC’s work, which, he said, “ensures that the alliance between Israel and the United States is never taken for granted.”
Delegates were also treated to two major panel discussions. The first one, moderated by Dan Senor, focused on U.S. foreign policy, and the second, led by David Horovitz, focused on the future of the Jewish people.
Conference programming featured nearly 100 breakout sessions, and delegates participated in more than 500 Capitol Hill meetings with their lawmakers. •NER•
